Do you have any other ideas for improving the efficiency of the fireplace- such as an air-exchanger grate- etc. Generally I like to close up the room when the fireplace is in use (we have bi-fold louvered doors in the room but closing them helps) and burn with the glass doors open.

There are a couple different devices on the market which increase the efficiency of fireplaces without major renovations. One such unit is Eco-Fire, which looks like a nicely designed appliance.
