Inexpensive temp monitor from off-site

Anyone know of a relatively inexpensive way to monitor house temp, or boiler water temp from off site? I'd rather not pay a huge monthly bill to a security type company if I can get it into my home computer and then access that. (I'm only moderately computer savvy, soooo...talk slowly.

The simplest cheap solution that I've seen is to point a webcam at a set of temperature readouts. There are more complex solutions - see the link in my signature ;-)
