Hello, First post after several hours of reading back posts. Overwelming
amounts of great information..

I not new to wood heat, but have very little knowledge regarding hydronic
wood heat. This forum is an amazing resource.

Is anyone here using a wood boiler as a replacement of a standard
wood stove? I'm considering putting in a boiler in a basement
rec room that has a class A chimney installed and plumbing it
over to an adjacent mechanical room and hooking it to
an existing HW heat system.

The system is a modern HWBB
with radiant in the basement concrete floor. Perhaps try it
for a season without any storage and add a tank in the future?

The basement is a daylight design so handling wood is no
problem and the homesite is in a wooded area with
years of supply on site.

Can a storage tank be remotely located from the boiler/heating
system? I see some concrete owner built tanks and it look
like a viable option for me if they are a good option.

In theory should be no problem. Depending on the boiler you choose, you may have code and insurance issues. You also may have size/space issues, as most wood boilers are substantially larger in size than most wood stoves. You may have aesthetic issues with the plumbing and wiring intruding into the ambiance of the rec room. A real positive is that the natural heat from the boiler will be captured in a space to be heated, so efficiency will be better than an install in an otherwise unheated space.
