Is it better to put just a few splits for a small fire in the front of the stove or in the back?

If you're going to burn a small fire in a big fire-box (like my F600) would you prefer to put just a few splits in the front close to the glass and the dog-house where the intake air comes in or in the very back so that the flames & smoke have to pass all the secondary air tubes?

Small fires I usually put in the front. The reason for a small fire is that you don't need a lot of heat. Build in front, it burns quickly and then goes out instead of roasting you out of the room.
