My son and his wife just bought this home...built roughly in the 60's. Behind the fireplace (and inside the sunroom) is this brick box...there's a metal lid that lifts to see a grate. Is it a type of grill?

Maybe. If so, I hope it's well vented.

I posted a couple of pictures the other day about this "box" in my sons house. I didn't have pics of the inside then...he doubts he'll ever use it but I thought it was a neat built-in feature.

Yeah lots were built in the 60s and 70s. Very few of them work without smoking out the room they are in. Many were originally outside where it didn't matter but closed in later.
