Is this what I think it is?

My son and his wife just bought this home...built roughly in the 60's. Behind the fireplace (and inside the sunroom) is this brick box...there's a metal lid that lifts to see a grate. Is it a type of grill?

I posted a couple of pictures the other day about this "box" in my sons house. I didn't have pics of the inside then...he doubts he'll ever use it but I thought it was a neat built-in feature.

Yeah lots were built in the 60s and 70s. Very few of them work without smoking out the room they are in. Many were originally outside where it didn't matter but closed in later.

I pulled out a Betty crocker outdoor cookbook from copyright 1961, first chapter, "bringing the barbecue indoors", it was the fad at the time

And in that book, the first Weber charcoal grill was called a "brazier", lol
