So I bought a used old Jotul 602, and installed it in my coal fireplace. Finally got it done, with the exception of reattaching the iron fireplace trim. Of course, I ran into snags. While I measured the fireplace, and stove, the chimney had a jog at the end, which prevented me from using the top exhaust on the stove as originally planned. I did a rear entry, which unfortunately cost me about 7" of hearth space. I also was able to install a flue damper which is accessible--although I haven't needed it so far. Ran 5" liner, about 27' length. Put down some perlite insulation--I wanted to see if I have leaks before I completely insulate. I also insulated the fireplace with 1" fiberglass topped with durock, and then added a sheetmetal radiant heat barrier on top of that spaced 1/2" from the durock. Used lengths of iron pipe as spacers. Cut out a block off plate as well. So far, so good. I just have to figure out how to use this damn thing--I don't know how to regulate a stove with no window and no secondaries. I've been burning with a stove top temp of 650 or so, and flue temps of 500. Sound OK? Here are some pics that will certainly be out of order...Thanks for all the help and advice!

Lookin' good, Mike. I think you'll be happier with it protruding out like that. Some have said that these stoves give off more heat when using the top exhaust, but I burned mine both ways and felt no difference. 602 temps will definitely run on the high side, especially on the cook plate. Since BG is still burning his, I'll let him give you particulars. But I can tell you, once the fire was going inside, my air control was open just a sliver, and it stilled burned hot and fast. Which I loved. :)
