jotul f3 - pipe collar won't snug

rear vent install. pipe collar slides into internal collar fine, but the notches (2) on the internal collar (cast iron) are huge - i believe they are probably for a traverse bar... Stove came supplied with two nut/bolts - but they do nothing to affix the removable pipe collar to the internal collar. Am i doing something wrong? Unless i get this snug, i can't depend on the snout (from liner kit) to remain level.

** unrelated - i would like to sawzall about 4" off the length of snout due to firebox/hearth/throat clearance. Anyone done this before? anything i may not be thing of?
