Damn, I've been smoking venison in the topload in a pan with a low coal bed...coulda patented something. But this drop in is nice for the Rangeley!
The flavor of food cooked inside the wood stove is the best. It has way better flavor than a gas or even charcoal grill. We grill food constantly at the shop on our cooking grills in the TL stoves and the Oakwood.

On Saturday I grilled/smoked some boneless chicken thighs on my TL-300.
The taste was unbelievable.

At first glance the grill looks like it would be great. However , does it not create quite a mess if there is no drip pan to catch the fat from meat ?
The coals below are the drip pan. The fat will burn off quickly there.
That would work with most top loaders, but the Rangely has a special system to open the baffle. Inorder to put sticks of wood into the firebox from the top and thus expose the coals, you have to turn a handle on the side of the stove and hold onto it to keep the baffle open. If you have the griddle on the top of the stove the coals would not be exposed unless you held onto this handle all the time. As far as I cansee the grill would be great to cook potatoes, veggies or anything else that wold not create fat.

I question whether both smoke and carbon monoxide would enter the house while using this grill.
When we open the top loading door on our Rangely, we will more often than not get smoke escaping.
This is one of the reasons we do not use it.

It needs good draft to avoid smoke spillage. What is the connector and chimney setup for the stove?

That's what i said a few posts back.Where's the grease pan? The griddle would have to be open for the grease to drop into stove.I think we have good enough draft for this to happen but you may get back puffing.Who Knows.I say GREASE PAN NEEDED! The salt i would worry about cause fat will burn off.
