Jotul Oslo top was glowing red

Put a fresh load in and left the side door cracked open just a bit to get the load started. Got distracted for a few and when I turned around the stove top in the center was glowing red and the stove temp was 800. Quickly closed the side door and fully opened the front door to cool the stove off. It cooled off and the top stopped glowing and it settled down. I have never had a stove glow red before. Should I be concerned about this and what should I look for as far as problems? The stove is painted brown will the paint be damaged in the area that glowed red?

One over fire shouldn't be a big deal, just have to keep on eye on it from now on, we've all done it at least once (or twice).

If the paint has discolored, there is probably no return. If it has not - you should be good to go. When you get to the point of a cold stove, do some looking. You are looking for warped items. If nothing appears out of the ordinary, again, you should be good to go.

The "center" griddle part of the Oslo is at least 200 degrees higher than the 4-corner locations for the stovetop thermometer. If the thermometer was on one of the corners and at 800, then the griddle was probably over 1000 degrees!!

Seems like leaving the door open on a reload is a dicey practice. Is it really necessary? It gets going faster, but how much, a few minutes? Probably not worth it, right?

If I was a betting man I would bet that you will not have this problem ever again . . . and will make sure you are never distracted and forget about the side door being left ajar. Experience . . . good and bad . .. is a great teacher.

You can bet right on that. Thanks for the replies. I checked the stove today and it looks fine. The paint is fine and no warping on the inside. Seeing your stove glow red like its melting will get your attention real quick.

Only thing Id worry about is getting distracted again. Simply cant allow that to happen with fire. With decent wood you really should never have to crack the side door. On a side note, I've had the stove over 800 and nothing ever turned red. Yours must have been hotter than that. If you are using a magnetic thermometer thay can be off at times.

My stove top griddle has gotten to 800 twice (just leaving the damper bypass open...not even cracking the door) when I was doing some chores upstairs. No part of the outside stove was red, but the refractory (not exactly sure what it is made of 100%) was glowing a dark red color just slightly...
