I recalled a post on here somewhere, involving the use of a Kill a Watt meter, in which a good determination was made of unwanted power use.
So anyway, here's an extensive article about the same and similar items.

I have one of these. I thought my 30 year old Bar Ref was using a lot of power, turns out its about $2.50 a month. Well worth it to keep the beer cold.
 
I haven't been shocked by any old refridgerator's energy use either, but I had a boom box/cd player that drew 20 watts whether it was on or not! Now I use one that has a manual switch, when it's off, it's really off.
