KozyHeat ZeroClearance Fireplaces

I'm close to ordering a KozyHeat fireplace, but I'm struggling to decide between two options: they sell a "Z231" series that is taller (not sure the firebox is any different) than the Z42 that I've been looking at. The Z231 uses an 8 inch class A chimney, the Z42 is a six inch. Does anyone have experience with these - is one an older technology than the other? I did note that the Z231 manual looks just a little older, and calls for 1/2 clearances on the unit itself where the Z42 can fasten right up to the wood framing. Cost is not all that different. Any opinions on either of these units would be great.

I have the z42CD. What I was told when purchasing, is that the Z42 is very similar in size to many of the non-EPA fireplaces, and therefore is often used in replacements. I think that is part of the reason for the size and design of the Z42. Obviously, the Z31 would not work nearly as easy for this. I didn't look at the Z31, because it would not work for me. Based on the specs, they appear to be similar in heating output, so I think it comes down to which you like better for looks. Either way, I don't think you will be disappointed, and Kozy Heat builds a nice fireplace and is an excellent company.

Thanks - I just talked with the manufacturer and the rep I talked to says the 231 ZC is not EPA certified - that this is the primary difference between the two. The fireboxes are the same except for the secondary-burn equipment in the Z42. I live in Virginia, so I guess I can go either direction - the sales rep suggested that I would get the same burn time, and it looks like the efficiencies are about the same. Am I crazy to put in a non-epa fireplace? I live back in the woods - no neighbors nearby.

Without the secondary burn equipment, I don't see how they could be the same efficiency wise. The secondary burn is a major contributor to overall efficiency. For me, that is a no brainer, go with the Z42. I like the CD, because the cast doors really look sharp. Plus we got custom screens on ours, and we love it.

OK, my apologies - the 231 ZC is "EPA exempt", whatever that means, and it DOES have a secondary burn chamber.

The 8" pipe for the 31 will cost more than the 6" for the 42. I don't know what the difference in unit cost is. All things considered, I would probably go with whichever one you think looks better. The 31 with all black grills and doors looks pretty nice. I would consider calling the mfg and asking why it is EPA excempt. With a secondary burn system, I'm not sure why it would not be EPA certified.

I have a Z42 and love it. Looked at the 231 and decided no due to height and it is a cat stove. I didn't want to have to replace the cat on it. I liked the looks of the 231 better.

Ah, now it makes more sense. So the main diff is cat vs non-cat. All other things being equal (BTU's/hr, burntime, firebox size), I would again have to say go with the Z42. Non cat will be easier to maintain.

All I know is that when I looked at them the salesman told me it was a cat and showed how to engage it.

Could be. Maybe they've been tinkering with their lineup. I'm going to call tomorrow with some more questions. Thanks for the comments.

Z42 is not a cat. Your right, the 6" pipe saves a lot of money. Works great, I've only been cleaning the chimney once a year with only about 2-3 cups of ash out of 4-5 cord of wood.
