LG Granules - Lopi Leyden - How to burn on Low

Folks: Purchased 2 tons of LG Granules and they are great pellets. (Purchased from woodpellets.com) Super low ash and a nice burn. The pellets seems to be smaller than usual so I've been able to re-install the fuel gate on my Lopi Leyden without any jams. On medium the stove works perfect and the LGGs produce very little soot and ash (compared to the terrible PA Pellets, LLC that I used last year). For my house medium blows us out of the family room so I've been trying to burn on Low.

The Lopi Leyden owners manual indicates that on low the restrictor needs to be closed or near closed...etc. When I do this, the right and left sides of the burn pot really don't clear out and I get chuncks of ash built up but zero fly ash after a day of burning. When I open up the restrictor a wee bit I get lots more fly ash and soot on the glass. The fy ash has a wood color as if maybe it's not 100% burned.

Any other folks out there have any luck burning on low?

I guess I either deal with the fire pot build up on a daily basis on a closed restrictor setting or the extra fly ash and glass soot after every 5 bags with the restrictor setting opened a wee bit....but maybe ther is an answer ;-)

I haven't had very good luck burning on low with the Leyden using any type of pellet. Tried it last night with Barefoots and the pot fills up with too many pellets. Looks like a feed/air mismatch on low no matter where I put the restrictor. I put it on #2 and it burns great. So, the lowest i can run mine on so it actually runs ok is heat #2 and fan on low #1.

I haven’t had much luck burning the LG's on low in my MINI either. Seems that because the LG's have allot of small pieces sometimes my auger will turn 2-3X with out dropping any pellets which causes the fire to burn low. Then there will be a large amount of pellets dropped the next auger turn and it takes a second for them to catch fire which causes smoke and the soot on the glass. I don’t burn on level 1 and when I burn on level 2 I have to clean the glass a lot, level 3-5 burn perfect.

Poughkeepsie, the stove HAS been completely cleaned since your original install, and hopefully before you fired it up this fall, right??

Most stoves have a hard time burning on their lowest setting. I had the toughest time with my Astoria on heat setting 1 also....had to play w/ the air intake, but never seemed to be able to get a good compromise. I ended-up doing the same....run it on 2nd green light or above. Usually had the air intake rod set at about 1 or 1 1/4 on a clean stove.

I had the same problem burning LG's last year in my stove so I dont think the problem is confined to your stove design. I kept having auger jams and the occasional burn-out on low. My LG pellets from last year had an extremely high level of fines which I am sure contributed to the problem. I have not experienced the same problem burning other brands.

LG's burn fine with my stove set on low. I'm waiting for the real cold to set in so I can to a back to back comparison with the leftover Barefoots from last year, but so far I prefer the LG's.

The LGs burn pretty good with my stove on low too. No clinkers/minimal ash.
Last couple of years I have been burning these during the shoulder seasons
and save my Green Supreme for the colder weather.

Pretty much the same set up here Poughkeepsie- Lopi Leyden installed in October of 2008 burned Energex last year, bought 3 tons of LGs for this winter. So far they have provided good heat but are producing far more ash running on low then I would have expected, the ash is far lighter then the Energex as it settles between the burn pot and the glass, glass gets no where near as dirty as with Energex. I am running most nights on second green light with restrictor open very little. I do not sift pellets, I burn everything in the bag so that may account for some of the ash.

Fire has choked out once due to burning on low. Hoping that the LG's do prove to be worth the extra $40 per ton once the cold weather sets in. Good luck.

Lgs burn great on low for me ,must be your stove.

my stove is on a thermostat and runs on low most of the time.
I've had no problems wit the LGs

We have a Lopi Leyden and I tried running it on low last season using a mixture of Maine Woods and Lignetics hard wood.

The fire never actually went out on low, but sure looked like it was thinking about it!

Being a long time wood burner, I have never liked a low lazy fire.

I hooked up a wired, programmable thermostat, set the stove on medium, and it works great.

Burninmg LGs this year, mixing them with left over Maine Woods.

The ash with the LGs is somewhat different, but they burn great and are a very clean pellet.

I think that's the way to go too. Keep the stove burning in it's "sweet spot".

Thanks All for the input. Greatly Appreciated! MACMAN....I totally cleaned the stove, swept the chimney and then let the dealer come in for the fan cleaning and gasget replacement so I should be good to go. What wireless thermostat are you using and would you buy it again.

PLL, I don't use a wireless stat...I have a wired Lux Programmable.

But if I were going to get one, I'd get the SkyTech 3301P.

Quite a few forum members use it with good success, and I'm sure it will work as advertised on the Leyden.

Macman - I purchased the Skytech 3301P.. Absolutly LOVE it! It was very easy to hook up and runs perfect. For $109 it was a deal. Thanks for the tip! What seeting do you suggest for setback on a pellet stove? 1, 2, or 3?

To others, on the Lopi Leyden I started to use low heat #2 and low fan #2 and the stove seems to like this combo with the LGs. I also purchased a "Super Quiet Fan" on ebay and that little thing really moves the hot air down the hallway. I'm now ready for winter!

I have my setback on 2...so far, so good.

Glad to hear that you're having good luck w/ the SkyTech. The Travis Ind. stoves electronics are far less finicky than some, and I figured the wireless would work well on yours.
