I performed a search - but couldn't find a specific answer for my question. Hope someone here can point me in the right direction.

I am knocking around a bunch of options. Most will rely on what the Township Building Inspector will allow and I am waiting on that.

I have a heatalator zero clearance fireplace (with gas log) that can also burn wood - but it's just for appearance and will not effectively heat. I would like a wood stove. But the chimney is not a Class A HT and needs to be replaced. There is an existing chase and a total replacement is one option.

I have two installers telling me - I should leave the existing fireplace and chimney and they can line it. They feel there is enough room to use insulation and a ss liner and then place a wood stove on a hearth pad - infront of the fire place. It could save me alot of money if this will be accepted - code wise. The heatalator is raised and I should have about 32 - 36 inches rise from the floor to top - to 90 a stove pipe into the fireplace.

I know these liners are more for older cracked masonary chimneys - but is it also safe to use on my chimney? I don't know much about the current chimney. I don't know if it's single walled or double walled. I know it has fire blocking on each floor of the chase and it's rated for 2 inch clearance. It's part number is SL348. It's not rated to 2100 HT.

Has anyone on this forum done this? Do you think it's safe or should I pull it and install a class A? What negatives are there for going with the liner vs a total replacement?

Thanks for the advice.

I framed in an alcove, installed the ceiling support box then ran class A up the existing heatilator chase. I could have removed the old chase but kept it with the idea of a fire stop if ever we had a chimney fire.

I don't think it would be a problem . We have done lots of things . I would call JB fire places in Ramsey NJ if you are around there. Jason or danny are both real good . ?They have installed lots of fire places ans stoves for me.
