I have a 2000 sq. ft. split foyer with an existing wood stove with an insulated 6" stainless steel flue lined masonry fireplace. I want to replace my old stove with a new more efficient stove/insert. The basement where stove is located is finished, but not used for entertaining. I am looking for a utilitarian wood burner, long burns, low maintenance. I don't care about glass doors or pretty finishes. I want good heat output, and that is all. Who makes good quality stoves with these features.

Greetings. What's your budget? We can suggest anything from a good $900 Englander 30NC up to a $3500 Blaze King King.
I am trying to make financially realistic decision. I have a usable, but probably inefficient stove now. I just don't want buy something with a 20 year cost savings payback time. I cut and split my own 2-3 cords of wood annually, and would like to maximize my heat for effort ratio.
How old is the stove that you have now? If it is pre EPA type then you are going to notice a big difference and you are on the right track for heat.
EPA stoves (which I imagine you are looking for) ( or a CAT stove ) will require truly seasoned wood. So plan accordingly for that.

For value it's hard to beat a 3 cu ft Englander or Drolet. They are selling around $1000 and are good heaters. Midrange pricewise would be the Regency 3100, Osburn 2400, Pacific Energy Summit, Napoleon 1900.
My old stove is a second hand 20 year old box type stove. Yes, I will be looking for EPA certified, and I need to look into models that qualify for Maryland's rebate program for new cleaner stoves.
Find 2-3 stoves that will fit your heating needs and then get on craigslist. A 100 mile drive might save you $1000.... Many would tell you to beware but it's worked out for me.
I would check and see if the MD funds are still available. Program started in September of 2012 and only had 50K.
