Lopi Freedom Bay

i recently purchased a Lopi Freedom Bay that is in great shape and I’ve been receiving bids on installation that will cost over $2,000 in my area (DFW). I understand the importance of a liner but I’m not sure we will like the stove and I hate to spend that type of money if we decide not to keep it. Has anyone ran this stove without the liner? I’m considering it on a temporary basis. The previous owner ran it for over 20 years without a liner and I’m thinking I can do a test run on it for the rest of our winter here in north Texas, but would like some input from any of those that have done this also.

It isn't permissable to install an insert as a slammer. At a minimum, it needs a blockoff plate installed with a stub into the chimney. However, that may end up with a poor performing insert and creosote buildup, especially if the chimney flue is large. To meet code, most chimneys need an insulated liner. Before proceeding, the chimney needs to be inspected to verify it is safe for wood stove operation. The liner ensures both safety and proper draft for the insert.
