Losing some ground

Had to turn the furnace on in the back bedrooms to keep up with the cold.
It is 12 degrees right now and stove is cranking but it got down inside to
64 degrees in the main part of home so i had to turn trans fan off to bedrooms
and let stove heat main part of house.I hate the sound of that furnace kicking on. :ahhh:

Just think about the $100/barrel fuel bill if you didn't have the insert? Maybe next time look at a stove!

18 degrees here and we are at our normal 70-72 temp with the old smoke dragon drafted down. Actually got too hot earlier this evening when it was 20 outside. Tomorrow nite in low teens...

-0.6 right next to the house. It's probably a bit colder. Windchill is in the negative 20s. I went through a good amount of wood last night and the furnace was going too.

Hehe no furnace for me!

Did my usual load at 10PM, woke up to a firebox literally full of coals and the living room at 68 (where the stove is), kitchen at 66 and the bedrooms at the other end of the small house a bit colder. There were so many coals I didn't even have to fool with kindling, which is rare for that little stove. CHocked it full with another load of hardwood, wash up, ate breakfast and left and it was already smoke free as I pulled out of the driveway.

We have to come up with new descriptions of our fellow wood burners....

Like: Hard Core (won't turn the furnace on until it gets to the point pipes might freeze).

If anyone ever read "Confederates in the Attic", there are some good stories of Civil War buffs who go out into the field to reenact battles - and the "hard core" - they don't bring anything....even an item of clothes or a blanket, that is modern. Instead they cuddle (called "spooning") with their fellow soliders in the trenches.

We can come up with prizes, like the "Henry David Thoreau" award, for heating a house on less than $25.00 (gas, bar oil, horse feed), per year.

Heck, I've had our t-stat set at 64 all season! That'll change of course once the stove is in.

We got to 11 here in SE Ohio...kept the main part of the house at about 68 (with a reload every 3-4 hours) and the front and bedrooms at 61-65 - the furnace is set at 60 and kicks on when I'm at work (I can't stand it either). I made it all night without the heat pump. Pretty good considering the amateur job that was done on the insulation.

I wonder what's going to happen if (when) we have a -20 cold snap? Seems like the Heritage can keep things about 50 degrees higher than outside temp at my house.

yeah I hear you all on this topic! I kept the house at 70 degrees..It must have stayed pretty much about 66 degrees cause my furnace didnt kick on until my programmable thermostate told it to at 5:45am...I set it at 68degrees and actually like to hear the burner come on..Would rather pay alittle in oil rather than having pipes freeze! Typically, when temps stay about 20 degrees my furnace never comes on

believe it or not it was 6 degrees here in the mountains of NC last night when I got up to reload the Fisher.

NO!! Cause I NEVER have my thermostat on either..so we're tied ;-P I feared our Keystone wouldn't keep up in this type of cold. Well, you learn and you learn. Since it's our first winter with it, I'm still learning. Loaded it last night around 11. Woke up to my nightly bladder alarm around 4AM, added a couple of med red maple splits to the 1/2 burned raging coal bed, engaged the combuster and left the air a bit more open. Got up 6am, house 68F, outside 1F and breezy. Not bad. However, there are many times now with all the kids gone that we could be away 8 or 9 hours and in weather like this I'm pretty sure I'd be down to 64-65 at the end. And it would take 3-4 hours to get it back up to 68 or above (and I prefer 72-73). In that situation, I know I'm gonna turn the furnace on to kick it back up to the upper 60's. Plus. I know I've got to run it every now and then just to keep it operational. So. I know I'm not gonna win the contest.

nope me neither nor do I want to! I figure I am saving a ton in fuel oil by burning basically free wood, I can afford to be alittle more comfortable and use the furnace now and again..If it runs for 15 minutes a day that is alot!

...unload bladder....load stove with wood....unblatter load...snort, hick...YOIKS, load stove. (did that twice last night!)

Lesseee, went to bed last night around 9:30, it was 1 outside and just over 70 in. Filled her up and went to bed. Got up at 5 to -9, dropped to -15 just before light. Inside was 63 away from the stove and after getting it going quickly jumped to 67+. I cant ask too much as my house is pretty big and still locating drafts to seal up (only been in it a year).
