I just got off the phone with my stove shop where I'm ordering my wood stove through. They said ballpark figure for a thimble, chimney, and all the parts needed to install a stainless chimney would be around $1500...now they also have a 25% off special right now. But I'm seeing Lowes has a chimney/thimble kit for ~$500. Seems like one hell of a price difference there.

Is it ok to just buy through Lowes and then give the installer those parts or is there some reason to pay a LOT more through a stove shop?

Thanks!

You could save some money by perhaps purchasing the Supervent stuff Lowe's sells. That's what I did, but I installed it myself. I went straight up and also found my support kit on eBay cheap. I used a 10% off coupon for the chimney I bought in the store. (Look on ebay for kits. Sometimes you can get lucky.)

I kinda doubt the dealer will want to use your stuff, but you can always ask, and that may be a way to bargain. Take your measurements first and price it all out from Lowe's. It can add up quick. Do you have the tools or desire to install it yourself? If he is taking 25% off of $1500, that may not be that bad. But, I would want a firm price and not a ballpark price.

Also, ask him what brand he would use if he installed it.

Thimble, chimney??? Got mine at Lowes, 6" kit was about $300.00 each stainless 3' piece was $100.00 hooked mine up Parts only 6 to 650 $

It's being installed by a private installer. The store reccommended him but why would he care who I get the parts from?

Thanks!

If he's an independent installer he shouldn't care whose parts he's installing. Unless he depends on the stove shop for most of his referrals. Just call him and ask him his rates to install the parts you buy. Were you going to be paying for the install through the shop or directly to the installer? The store might have been taking a markup on the labor. Dealing directly with the installer might save you some money.

Got all my stuff from lowes happy with the quality of it double wall 6 inch.

All the chimney parts for the Timber Ridge came from Lowes .. cost was about $300. The Dixette and a buddy installed it.

I called him, he's going to call me later with the parts list so I can do my own homework.

He DOES get most of his referrals from this stove shop but he doesn't seem to care where the parts come from. He gave me an estimate of $800 for installation of the thimble/chimney/stove which I'm fine with. If I can pickup the parts for $500-$700 that'll save me a LOT! The stove shop gave me a ballpark figure of $1500 for the parts...no way I'm paying a markup like that if I don't have to!!

What I'd really appreciate is, when I find out what parts I need and find the lowes pages that I THINK are right....someone to proof read my work for me to make sure I am special ordering the right stuff.

But the guy at lowes said the kits are $220-ish and the class A chiney is $68 for a 36" length.

Thanks!

Oh Oh!!! One question I did have...

The guy last night said something about needing a 2 ft. section of stove pipe to go up BEFORE entering the wall...and that it would give us more of a draft than a direct connect from the back of the stove to the wall...what was he talking about and is he correct? If so, is it really that big of a deal or not worth worrying about?

Thanks!!:)

Are you sure the quote you got from the hearth shop did not include labor? Unless the chimney is really tall that price should be close to the total installed. I am not sure what stove you have purchased, but a stove with a bypass damper would be helpful and if possible make the chimney taller than required. These systems very commonly smoke out upon start up and reload.

Nope...wasn't including labor...When I went online and saw Lowes had them that cheap...then came here and did some reading on the Supervent brand...it was a no brainer. But I still wanted to discuss it to make sure it was ok to do.

Thanks!

Now is there anything I'll need for the job that I CAN'T buy at Lowes/HD? Does this external chimney need anything terracotta for the thimble or anything else that, again, I couldn't get through a hardware store?

Thanks!
