I have a Progress Hybrid. This is my first year burning it. I cleaned it today, cleaned the catalytic, emptied the ashes..etc. Then I fired it up and after a while went to close the bypass, then i realized that I started this from a cold start with the catalytic engaged. What does this do to the stove? Will this cause a problem? It seems to be running fine now.

Nothing to worry about.

That won't be your first time doing that. But it's fine as everyone here says. Never understood Woodstock with their lever and door handle. Here is a company that has so many advances in burning technology yet they make a lever that is identical in either direction for bypass and engaged, is made of metal (hot) and has a wacky removable handle for the loading door. Least they could do is incorporate the wacky handle to operate both the bypass and door.

The only thing that might happen is you coat the inside of the combustor with creosote. Then when it gets hot enough the cat burns the creo off, but the ash sticks....I don't think it's like fly ash, that will just blow out. That's why I don't close the bypass until the stove is hot enough that the cat will start burning almost instantly. Doing it once shouldn't be a problem, though.
