Maine Woods Pellets - Good, Bad, or Indifferent?

You didn't fumble, but you didn't score a touchdown either. Let's say you just kicked a 4th down field goal after having 1st and goal from the 5. There's better pellets for sure, but then there are also New Englands and Inferno's. Your MWP are somewhere in the middle. And your price of $219 id good. Now, enjoy the stove and maybe Santa will bring you some Turmans if youv'e been good this year!
Nope, you wouldn't. Some would and maybe others wouldn't. None of us are right or wrong, just personal preference and opinion. I guess that's why they make both Fords and Chevys.jdege said:
I have been burning them this season and they seem fine. I do not find excessive ash. Have not had the stove on very high in southern Ma yet crazy weather.

I really like my MWP, they keep my 2100 sq ft raised ranch nice and toasty. Ash, none in the burn pot and only have to empty the ash bin once with every ton. Now, I have burned a lot of them,(about 5 tons) and wish some of my other pellets were MWP, but that is not the way it is, and I will have to live with it until they are gone. I bought them a couple years back and have been slow to use them because they are so dirty, Engergex, and yes I have burned about 10 tons of them. Both have given me good heat, and I do NOT consider either of them a shoulder pellet. They will get you through a winter just fine. My brother and my daughter both have the same stove I do, and both burned MWP with the same good results as I have. My daughter's stove is the insert model so she does have to clean out the stove more often because there is no ash bin in the bottom.
Since you have no previous experience with MWP, then you will not have had the negative experience some people had with the 2008 batch of pellet that were not premium. The company got the message and cleaned up their product. Those who got burned with the older pellets have such a bitter taste left, they wouldn't buy them if they were rebagged Okies. Others have burned a few bags of the newer issue and will say they have burned others they like better or they may find out they are a decent pellet at a good price. That is the way it goes with pellets.

I have burned them....what i found is as it got colder at night,they didnt throw as much heat as i would like.
I will still use them when its on the warmer side of things,for the price they aint all that bad,i havnt really noticed any more ash with them

I have burned a half ton of them. No clinkers and a clean glass. Heat output is good but they burn very ashy for me.
For 219 a ton they are a buy.

THIS years (or my batch) MWP hardwood blend are the WORST pellet I have ever burned (which would include: CleanFire Hardwood, LG's, Maine's Choice hardwood blend, Okanagon, CleanFire Pacific, and MWP softwood).
LOTS of ash, and low heat. Can't wait until their gone

So little heat I have already gone through 60 bags, won't be long now.....

Hey guys,
First post. I've had my stove for a year and I bought 2 tons of the MWP for $204 a ton in October. I am disappointed in the low heat. Now that the cold air is settling in I have to run the stove around 4 to get the house to 66 where as last year I was running around 3 to get the house at 68. I can't remember what pellet I used but anything is better than these.

I am having a hard time with these too. I bought 4 tons and 1 of the tons is defective and has a TON of 2" pellets in it that were causing upper auger jams in my 25-PDVC. In their defense, they have been very kind about it and Scott has replaced about half of the ton so far.
They is a lot of ash and they don't burn very hot. I swapped out some bags with my father-in-law. He has Okanagan. I burned the Okanagan on Christmas Day when we had family over. The Okanagans burn hotter on 1 than the MWP on 9.
Like I said, the company themselves have been great...very friendly and willing to help with my long pellet problem, but the pellets themselves are pretty sad. I'm referring to their blend pellet here...I suspect their all softwood ones are probably better.

I have some MWP, been buying 3 bags at a time and stacking them for the future. At a cost of under $4 a bag I don't mind cleaning more often.
I usually burn them when these crazy temps this year pop back up to 40 °F during the day.
I can visually tell if the MWPs are running out of the hopper and the Okies are burning as the MWP have a much lower flame height and a lot of fireworks, whereas the Okies have a higher flame and much warmer.
Next week forecast of daytime temps on Sunday and Monday of 16, and 21, with night time temps of -10 and -12 I will definitely burn Okies as I cannot get the heat out of the MWP.
On a side note I was in Lowe's yesterday and they had wood pellets for about $4.97 a bag if you purchased a ton. I don't remember the name, but they were a clear and light green bag maybe these are the Green Supreme? Anyway if you looked at the bottom of the bag the MWP label is there. These MWP are all over the place in disguise.

I think you've mistaken them with NEWP. NEWP is the maker of the Green Supreme's not MWP.

If they had an MWP on the bag, they weren't Greene Supremes, they are made by NEWP in Jaffrey, NH.

My first year pellet burning and I bought 3 tons of MWP this fall for $219 delivered. They have run good in my stove. I am ok with the heat. They are keeping my large, drafty log home heated to 72* even when the temps get to 0*. Seems the Harman doesn't care what I put in it. Good test coming up this weekend as it is suppose to get down to 0* or below for multiple days. I will buy more next year unless I find a super pellet at a decent price. I clean weekly but based on what I have seen my ash pan will hold a ton worth of ash so can't say if that is excessive ash.
I will try to get the name this evening. I didn't pay to much attention after seeing the $4.97 a bag price for 50 bags.

they are ashy. my burnpot set up blows the fly ash out into the firebox. so the fact that i already clean my stove pretty much everyday helps.
no clinkers ever. low fines and great price delivered. and that is a plus for me since i don't have a truck and there are no big box stores up here.
maybe me having a small house makes a difference here.
but i am in agreement with the post someone made in another thread.
if another pellet cost's 37% more, does it really have 37% more heat per bag?
if my stove were running on high and couldn't do the job, then i'd look for a different pellet.
(i run it on medium with the feed gate closed as far as it goes.)
next season i will be on the lookout for another brand in the same price range.
if i can find one that i can get delivered for around the same price, i'll try them.
but aside from that i expect to be burning mwps again next year.
i have seen a few long pellets in only some of the bags. the ps50 is impervious to these it seems.
it has the flexible auger design.
