Mineral wool substitute

Even though my betrothed insert doesn't have any R requirements for the hearth, I wanted to go ahead and throw some insulation in there for good measure. I've called several places 'round these here parts, and ain't nobody never heard of no dang mineral wool. Yeehaw.

Are there any other non-combustible insulation substitutes (inexpensive) that I could use?

When I was researching my own hearth materials I looked at rigid millboard insulation at McMaster Carr (an incredible resource for many needs!) I didn't end up using any - but wondered if it compares favorablly in price and appropriateness for this application. Many people have asked at this site where to get Micore boards in small dimensions and it's $$$.

Maybe one of the experts here could look and comment on this product. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the millboard.

try calling an hvac supplier and ask for "rock wool" Thats what they call it in some parts

I give up, I must be the only person in the south who's ever wanted to build an insulated hearth. I even found that Certainteed makes a product called Thermafiber, still can't find anybody around here that has heard of it or carries it. Oh well, guess it wasn't that important, hopefully not too much heat will be lost through the floor and I'm sure it won't be dangerous since the rest of the hearth construction will be non-combustible. I'll ask my fireplace salesdude today if he knows of anything, but the hearth constructions starts tomorrow so I don't have much time to round something up. Thanks for y'alls help!

Try and contact a drywall/ insulation supply store. I just picked up a bale from Pioneer Materials, 128 sq. ft. coverage for $46. Way more than I need, but -hey!

Here is a place that sells rolls or a box of roll end scraps, at good prices. I bought a box of scraps from them and they were quality squares about 10x10 1 inch thick. I made my own thimble and padded the walls with them.

Thanks for the tips, guys, really appreciate it. Went by my dealer's place to actually buy the insert (decision made, aren't ya proud!!) and he had some scrap pipe wrap, the same stuff they'll use to wrap my existing pipe to get it up to HT requirements, which he said was fireproof or whatever. Don't y'all think that'd work? Should I put the foil side up toward the hearth top or down against the floor?

Not sure exactly what 'pipe wrap' is, but the stuff they wrap around stainless chimney liner pipe is pretty dang fireproof... like Kaowool fireproof, rock wool fireproof. Your dealer oughta have a bunch of that.

Yup, that's what it is. I'm sure they have a bunch but he only turned loose of a little scrap for free. Should I put it inside the hearth foil side up or down?

Decided on the Lopi 1750i. Hearth construction starts tomorrow, insert will hopefully be in next week! Yea!
