Hi

Just bought a house, and I have a firebox insert, surrounded by brick and mortar. I dislike the look immensely, but can not remove/replace due to the fact that the bricks are part of the chimney.

I have successfully used mortar and stone around a firebox insert before, but that was on backerboard nailed to existing studs.

Can I mortar over the brick, and affix stone?

Thanks!

You might be better off screwing some thin cement board on first so you have a good surface

screwing some thin cement board on

Thanks. You mean, screw into the brick?
Sure it will hold good. Not mortar joint though. You won't need too many tapcons.
If you can make it one or two pieces that would be better.
