So I'm sitting here watching the football game with a heating pad on my back when I think "It's pretty warm in here. I should check the stove temp." It was at 660F stovetop!!! An all new high and now I'm watching it like a hawk to make sure it's coming down. I opened the damper some to let some heat out.

I think opening the damper as you close in on 700 degrees is counter to one's instinct, but it works!

My view of what happens when you do this is not so much you let heat escape out the chimney, but allow some flames off the splits to burn the smoke and in doing so depriving the cat of some fuel - preventing the cat only heat from driving your stove top over 700 degrees. That flame heat really heats up the stove sides/front/back and that's where the heat is going. For my Keystone, anything open more than #2 is definately sending heat up the chimney, but if I need the heat really cranking, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 will get me some serious stove top and stove sides/front/back heat vs a cat only burn.

Great stove you got!

You got a ways to go before you brake my record of 750 on my old Fireview! Quickest way to bring her down is the bypass but if you catch it before it gets out of hand a little more air to get some flame in the box will bring the temps down.

:gulp: What kind of load did you have in there, and where was the air set?
I'm not sure what my stove top went to the other day when I drifted off, but there were only a few small splits in front and a larger quarter-round in the back. Air was at about 1 or a little over. I don't think it could have gotten to 550 on that load but I was out for about an hour and a half. Small splits were coals and the big split was about 1/4 gone. Top was at 450 when I regained consciousness and the glass wasn't totally clean. May not have gone too much higher than that...

It was a mix of four unknowns but I do believe there was some oak in there. Damper was set at 1 or a little under.
