so i have a vogelzang defender wood stove i just purchased. i have it on/ one quareter of it in the fireplace opening i have the stove pipe ran up past the damper and into the first flue tile. i had my chimney checked and it was given the ok to burn. My basement is finished where i have the stove. the stove says it can heat 1200 sq ft, but its keeping the basement at 70 degrees and i cant get it any hotter. the stove pipe runs up to a sheet of fireboard with a hole cut thru it so the heat is escaping out of the fireplace. what am i doing wrong. am i better off to pull the stove out of the fireplace and have it freestanding? will that heat the area better? i have the blower on the stove at max speed.

Yes, you will get more heat if the stove is freestanding; also, do you have a full liner? It did not sound like it from your description. This is what folks call a "slam in". There are a lot of things that need to be done in the name of safety if you are doing the install yourself. I am sure others with wiser skills than mine will be along shortly.

i just have the stove pipe running up into the the first flue tile of the chimney prob about half into that first tile. ive read on here about having a full ss liner run but right now money is tight due to the new home purchase. hence why i bought the cheap stove haha

Heating from the basement is hit or miss for a lot of people. At the very least, you will have to oversize your stove to meet your needs. Is the basement finished and insulated?

Do you have a blockoff plate?

I hope you have another form of heat in your home!
Seriously, my cousin have a slam in, and did a very nice job of it. That was probably the main reason for the chimney fire that caused major damage two Christmases ago. Luckily it happened during the day and they caught it in time. They had insurance, but it was a nightmare, living in a house with plastic draped over opened areas, and smoke damage everywhere, not just the stove room. I hope you will reconsider, and try to get it done right, or wait until you can afford it.

yes i had a blockoff plate in place. basement is finished and is insulated. it has new windows in it anderson windows. so im pretty sure im not losing the heat anywhere

How many sq ft are you trying to heat?
How hot are you getting your stove?
How dry is your wood?
How often do you check your pipe and chimney?

other form of heat in home is propane heated hot water baseboard. price of propane is 3.39 a gallon (unreal) i have a 12 year old son and a 1 year old son. i would not want to endanger them if this is a bad install. im also pretty sure wife would kill me if i caught the house on fire seeing we have only been in the hoouse a month

basement is roughly 1000 sq ft. wood has been seasoned for 1.5 yrs. ive been trying to get it as hot as possible

Do you plan on brushing your chimney yourself? A good idea is to make sure it stays in good shape. Certainly, get the SS flue pipe when you can. Also, CO detector if you haven't already put them in.
Make sure those little guys steer clear of the stove() !

The current setup is doomed to failure. In order to work well and put out good heat, your Performer needs adequate draft to pull air through the secondaries. Right now the draft is diluted by dumping into a larger chimney and extra air coming from below due to the lack of a block off plate. It's not going to work well until a proper, full liner is put in. But re-clean the chimney first to get the crud out that accumulated so far. Then put in a full liner, insulate under the top cap, and put in more packed Roxul around the bottom, with a block off plate. After these corrections, as long as the wood is dry, you will think you have an entirely different stove. It will crank out a lot more heat and the block off plate will help keep it in the house.
