It has been very cold the last few days , about 0F at night and 15 -20F during the day. So I had sorted out some shorter splits in the 17"-18" range , loaded them NS for the overnight burn , then the next morning for the day long burn. I had always loaded EW due to the length of the splits , but after the NS loads , NS is the way to go. On a NS reload , the fire ignites faster, burns evenly across the width of the stove and comes up to temperature faster. The fire is much easier to control and there is no chance of a split rolling into the glass. Much easier to load , due to being easier to fit the splits in and then being able to fill in the gaps for a fully packed stove. I can set the splits on the floor next to the stove and stack them the best way to fit in the stove. Then just reassemble the stack in the stove.

I think N/S burns hotter and quicker but gives a better use of a fire box. Unfortunately I am not able to do that too often due to my shallow fire box.

I find loading n/s is a lot easier than e/w on my regency. I always seems to touch my arm on the top of the stove when reaching all the way to the back of the stove to load the first few pieces. its just so much easier to do n/s. plus the load ignites quicker and gets up to temp much faster as said earlier. I feel that the n/s doesn't get any shorter burn times than the e/w. I actually feel that the n/s stays hotter longer.
