want to put a pellet stove where previous owner had a wood stove. Do I need to install a stainless liner all the way up the chimney? Here is a picture of the setup

I don't know why you'd ever need a liner. I install mine in the basement through a wood stove flue for years and never had any issues. I would not put a liner in if I were you. Wood stoves produce a lot more heat and a lot more smoke so if that was fine new pellet stove will be fine in my opinion

I vent through a class a wood stove chimney and
have for the last 18 years with no problems. The
only reason I see for a liner is if there is a problem with
your original flue.
