Hi All - Would really appreciate your advice on this, I am getting a lot of conflicting information from people I talk to. I have a woodstove alcove I am redoing. I need to finish the walls around the woodstove - would appreciate a real clean appearance no firebrick or bricks or stone. I have installed the appropriate cement board (hardie board) with all of the appopriate clearances, but I need to mortar over the concrete board now for a nice smooth appearance. What is the best option of cement/mortar to do this. I want it to look as smooth as possible, grey color if possible. I have heard everything from use thinset to use regular type s mortar, to refractory cement to castable refractory cement. I just need some opinions on what can withstand the heat in the alcove and not crack. Thank you all!

Do you have seams that need to be covered? If not, could you just paint?

Hi Yes, small seams in the corners I thought about painting but I want it to look correct, and I would need to cover the concrete board screws as well.
