Have you found if the HVAC fan works to move the air?

I don't have HVAC, but my Dad does and uses his to circulate through the whole house.
I'm sure there is a way to get your HVAC to use the fan to circulate on a timer.

On a good note- I managed to "negotiate" a ton of pellets for free with purchase of the stove

Average use for entire year is 4 to 5 tons for me per year .

I was told 3.5 to 4 tons

You also need to keep in mind that with the insert you will still have your propane furnace to heat the house with if there's an issue with the stove or I'd you are away for a while. I like the idea of having a backup.

I was between a stove and a furnace but figured it would be better to keep the oil boiler.

Have you thought about a free standing stove and leaving the fireplace alone? You can locate it in a better spot and get a bigger stove. Not sure if your house has a good spot for it
