you might contact a local historic preservation group in your area too for info on the plaster in your house; they may have combustibilty info...?

No surprises there. That's a fair estimate and about what I expect it to be. So far this sounds like a dealer that is trying to do this correctly so that you have a safe, stove for many years to come. The only change I would make would be to drop down to a 5.5" liner due to the very tall chimney. Be careful with cut-rate quotes, they can often lead to cut-rate work.

So BeGreen and others, I have a lead on a four year old jotul c450 insert for $900. It's about four hour drive from here. For $1600 cheaper than this insert new, I think it could be worth the trip - I could even make it an overnight adventure with the family!

The dealer I spoke with (as is probably the case with all dealers) won't install a stove that he doesn't sell, however, I'm sure I could get someone else to do a good/safe install. What I would need to figure out before make the trip to get this is that this insert will in fact work in my fireplace with only minor modifications. I will try to work on this over the next two days.

Any thoughts or suggestions for things I should think of before making the trip to grab this would be appreciated.

Have you downloaded the manual so you know the specs, including "distance to combustibles," required hearth r-value, etc.?

I'm sure you could get a chimney sweep to install the insert. You might want to talk with a couple before you buy it. Just double -check the clearances and make sure the insert is in good shape.
