need smoke hood

I have been lurking a few quite a while and soaking up a ton of info from this site.

I have an AHS Multi fuel boiler in my garage that heats my home. It does a great job. I also have a Harmon Mark II in my basement for when it really isn;'t cold enough out to fire up the big boiler. It does a great job also.

But, since I burn mostly coal I am in need of a smoke hood for my AHS boiler. The smoke and fly ash gets all over my garage and makes a mess. Anyone know where I can find some sort of smoke hood? i have looked everywhere.

Most any HVAC shops do tin work and can build whatever you need.

Do you get less or no ash/smoke if you open the garage door or a window to allow more air into the garage? I will get some smoke from my Tarm unless I provide adequate air to feed the natural draft when the firebox door is opened, and with adequate air, there is no smoke. Perhaps your air supply is deficient. But sometimes due to boiler design, the smoke hood is the only thing that will work.

I use a bathroom vent fan above my wood furnace. But I'm not dealing with a huge amount of smoke either, I just turn it on before I fill to keep that smoke smell out of the house.

Yeah, but that smoke hood is almost $500. i was hoping someone had a lead on one a bit cheaper.

My boiler has a forced draft blower that works really well. I do turn the blower off before opening the door but the fire is usually still raging and fly ash and smoke still escapes. Over time that fly ash gets all over everything.

I built one which works very good with my woodgun. After doing some searching for an appropriate fan I found a great one through a hydroponics dealer. It moves 450 cfm and is all metal and the cost was around 150 bucks. Before this I used a bilge blower from a boat but the heat melted the plastic impeller after a few months.

$500! WOW, prices sure have gone up in the last few years, I could have sworn it was around $250 when I bought my boiler. My smoke escpe problem is very limted but when I was considering a smoke hood the main thing was staying away from plastic and be sure you can move a lot of cfm. I recall AHS's was at least 250 cfm but at $500 I can't imagine they will sell many!

I know that this is an old post......... but the green light must be on (blower) before opening the loading door! or at least it is that way on my WG. Re read your O.M. and look at the stickers on the unit. Mine is not a multi fuel so I may be all wrong. The AHS hood works very well for me, I included it on the orig. order and it was $250 last summer.

Good point!! I guess I didn't read that properly.....never, EVER open the loading door on a WG w/o the fan running, if we are indeed talking about the draft fan.
I have experimented with closing the fesh air inlet damper completely before opening the door but didn't see much of a difference. The smoke shield does make a BIG diffeence in controlling any escaping smoke along with loading when down to mainly coals(if possible).
