I have a vermont castings defiant, model 1 I think, bought in 1977 and used ever since...now I am having a problem with the handle on the side loading door. This model has the nickel handle on the outside of the door. For some reason (rust?) it has seized up and I can barely get the door open and reclosed after adding wood. I tried oiling it on the inside and outside, which made things worse... the inner strike bolt has an allen nut but it is a strange diameter and it seems loose anyway. The exterior handle has only a pin hole opening in it, again not a standard allen wrench size. My question is: can the handle shaft be removed from either side of the door? I am worried about tapping it and either breaking it or cracking the door. I would appreciate any suggestions all of you might have, since it is in the single digits here tonight and I worry there will come a point where I will not be able to either open or shut the door. Thanks!
