Just tried out new fiskars x27 splitting axe. I can't believe how easy this thing is to split wood. I barely have to swing axe an dingoes right through splits. Stumps may take a couple,of swings to start but after that it is very easy. I love this new addition better than my 8 lb maul. I thought all,the reviews were overstated but I was wrong.

It is a polarizing product. You'll see a lot of love for them on this forum.
I own one, and I use it a lot, but is does have its limitations. It is a splitting axe, as opposed to a maul. It works great when you need a splitting axe. I always carry the maul with me too though.
Keep it sharp, invest in a bastard file if you don't have one already. I don't know who, but someone on this forum learned me good... "If you bought it sharp, keep it sharp."

I was just posting how well my Fiskars handled a big old mockernut hickory log I'm busting up. I had rounds too heavy for me to carry without risking a hernia - 18" diameter and 17" long.... one or two whacks with the Fiskars and they were in half.
I love how light the thing is - it's like I can swing it all day long. I also seem to be a lot more accurate with it for some reason.

I have an X27 and I do like it, but it's, ahhh, maybe not quite as amazing as some would have it. Oh, I'm not at all sorry I bought it. Probably would do it again. Perhaps because I'm a small, wiry, older guy- around 140 and not particularly over- muscled, but I'm not all that awesome when swinging the thing. I think those of you who are bigger and heavier will get legendary performance out of one. Sure is nice and sharp, beats my regular axe for sure. Sometimes my maul is a better choice, as Cold suggests above.
If I could grab only 3 types of tool for my hand splitting, I'd grab my X27, my 8lb maul and a few wedges. If I could bring 4, I'd include my 8lb sledge, much better for whacking the wedges than the maul. Only 2? The X27 stays home, more likely- it's the maul and wedges. 1 thing? The X27 goes and all the other stuff stays. I guess that says a lot- when I prioritize down to one item, it's the X27. Certainly not junk, it's probably well worth what they cost. I could make more effective use of it if I were bigger. But then that's why I bought my electric splitter...

I bought one last year, went back and forth between it and my maul, sledge, and wedges last winter, but haven't brought out anything but the x27 this year. If the x27 won't split a round, I've found it's almost too much work too for a maul too and I'll end up with a maul and 2 wedges in the round before it splits and then I'm worn out from just one log. So if the x27 isn't up to the job, I'll just noodle the log into something the Fiskars can handle.
I do think it's more effective at splitting than my maul - but the main advantage seems to me to be that it's a WHOLE lot easier to swing. It's better balanced, it's considerably lighter, and it's more accurate. It also definitely transmits quite a bit less shock into my arms than does the maul. So - when I'm done splitting a few hours worth of wood with the Fiskars, I've got a nice burn in my arms....but not an ache, as I probably would have if I'd used the maul. Last year when I was splitting with my maul and wedges, I'd get sore arms and even a sore back if I split too much wood. But with the Fiskars I get none of that...and as a result I can process a lot more wood over the course of a week.

I am still yet to make the purchase of an x27....its something i must have when i start splitting again when summer is over..
X27 is the BEST hand tool I have invested in for years.

Finally picked one up myself. I honestly can't believe it. I'm splitting 18" rounds of red oak in two swings. Amazing.

I almost bought one at Walmart, it looked exactly like the x27 except it didn't say it anywhere on it.
If I remember correctly it said "super splitter" it was 36 inch long, does anybody know what the difference is?

Not sure but how much was the walmart version? I got my x27 on amazon for $44 with free shipping. If the Walmart one is anywhere close to that price you should just get the fiskars.

It was around $50-60 can't remember exactly it was a month ago. Just to clarify it was a fiskars, it didn't say x27 anywhere on it just super splitter.
A lot of times that free shipping doesn't include ak.
