So as you guys are wrapping things up for your burning season, we are just getting started down here in the southern hemisphere....its been cold and wet and before I started burning I needed to buy some new fire bricks for my Austwood insert....I measured up the the insert the other week and ordered new bricks from BBQ's Galore.....as it turns out no one stocks bricks to fit my heater anymore so i had to do some hard core mathematics to calculate a combination of different sized bricks to fit my insert...in the end i still had to do some trimming with an angle grinder to get the perfect fit....

Off to the store to pick up the bricks with my dog to keep me company....

two different sized bricks...

just over $11 AU per brick for anyone in Australia wondering how much......

Heres my insert with the old bricks removed.....

[Hearth.com] New fire bricks and first fire for 2014!!

I had to trim the edge off one brick, but otherwise a perfect fit....2 X HS 22's up the back and 4 X HS 20's along the front with 90mm taken off the long edge of the last brick for a perfect fit.....

So then I cracked the seal on the 2014 wood pile and transferred a few wheel barrow loads up to my wood box outside the back door...

Do dogs need a drivers license in Australia? Looks like he's serious. Fire looks good!

I believe they drive on a left side of the road there so the dog was only a passenger.

Off topic: That is one dog serious about his rides! The look of determination. Handsome dog, too.

On topic: Very well-organized wood pile. What type of wood do you burn down in Oz?

Firebrick question for wise members: Should every square inch (square cm) of the stove floor be covered in firebrick? Or is it OK/advantageous to have small gaps between the firebricks (either on the floor or the sides)?

It's fine to have cracks between the bricks and even small gaps are fine. Most new stoves have a fair amount of gaps, they just fill in with ash. It Locks it together very well.

Thank you! I was comparing my Englander 13 to the Original Poster's picture above (no gaps there).

Good pictures with a happy ending. That is the way to do it.

Like you said warming up here.
