Sounds to me like a briquetting operation. The extruders are smaller physically than pellet extruders and take less power to run. Sort of like squeezing a toothpaste tube full of hammermilled wood into a rectangular form, heating the form and wacking the extrusion off at the end into dimensionally equal segments.

That could be accomplished in a small gym. Pelletizing for biofuel can't. The machines are too big.

Probably fail with school facilities still being on the property. 2 similar projects here failed because some NIMBY didn't want their kid "adversely effected by industrial activities".
Take out the "kid" factor and it might fly.

They'd just export them anyway................

"Kidwell would install two machines that would manufacture softwood pellets for home-heating use..."

"They would run two manufacturing machines that could generate a maximum capacity of 20,000 tons of home-heating pellets for regional sale..."

that's quite near me.
if they end up being decent pellets at a decent price, i would buy from them.
if they plan on selling retail.

where is the feedstock coming from?

Maine Is awash in low grade feedstock, it all comes down to if they can pay the going rate.

Of far greater significance is the Maine Wood Pellets project in Athens Maine, they are installing generation to self generate power as part of the process (broken link removed to http://www.energymanagertoday.com/pellet-maker-installs-orc-biomass-power-system-0108258/). The ORC technology was developed and used in several plants in Europe.

I wish ScotL well in his cutting the cable to CMP.

I agree, but this is like comparing Anheuser - Busch to Steve's Suds ................... a small start-up in that area would be great ..................... I remember my father selling boltwood to the original sawmill in Athens that started the MWP empire ....................

Hello everyone just wanted to chime in and introduce myself. My name is David Kidwell I am founder of the wood pellet mill in Mattawamkeag. Heard about this thread from a regular user on the Hearth.com boards and got Jims(webfish) permission to introduce myself and my business.

PineTree Pellet Fuels is a small scale consumer grade wood pellet manufacturing company. We produce pellets for use in Maine and New England not for overseas consumption. Reading what the papers print online and what is said on boards like this there seems to be a lack of knowledge about the project and our company. I don't plan on addressing the speculation listed on this thread but rather have the wood pellet community follow our progress of getting the mill up and running and all the issues and hurdles that come with setting up such a venture on a separate thread.

Once I have the new thread started I will post it here, and for everyone from supporters to doubters can follow the progression.

Again I need to thank Jim for allowing me to introduce myself and the PTPF to the Hearth.com community.

Glad to have you here, and best of luck with the venture. Definitely interested in trying some once you get up and running. Keep us posted, please.

How refreshing. A supplier not succumbing to bulk shipment of pellets overseas. I wish them the best as well.

With US dollar so high and Canadian dollar lower I expect that bulk pellet producers are rethinking bulk european shipments.

welcome, david.
i definitely look forward to driving over and seeing the mill once you get everything up and running.
i would also curious if you plan on selling directly to customers in the area.
all the very best wishes for you in this endeavour.
