Bought a house with a gas fireplace. Didn't notice it was gas till recently lol. Has the gas line coming up in the middle of the firebox and not sure how that works. It is vented.
 
From your description, there may have been some sort of Log Lighter in there.
It's used to get the log fire burning in lieu of kindling. It may have been partially removed.
Once you're able to post a pic, I will know better...

I got it. Yeah, that looks like the remnants of a gas Log Lighter.
Off of each side of that tee, there would have been a length of
Black Iron Pipe with a series of holes drilled in it, & a cap on the end.
The gas would be turned on, & flow out the holes where it would be
ignited with a fire source. Stacking fire wood on the grate above the
pipes would allow the gas to ignite the splits.
There should be more plumbing directly below.
If you intend to burn wood, I would suggest removing all the pipe,
& sealing the hole before you do so.
