I just found this forum and have learned a great deal in just an hour or so. I have a Northstar - Heat-n-glo unit and didn't realize that the contractor (not the fireplace installer but my GC) apparently removed the baffle unit and insulating blanket while the house was under construction. I don't use the unit often but have built a dozen fires or so before realizing the baffle was a necessity and had been removed. I have ordered the baffle and blanket but wondered if there is anything I might have damaged on the unit without the baffle in place. Any thoughts are appreciated.
