Yep. Our daily high today was our average low for the day. Gonna get bone chilling, well it is already darn cold, here in the Tropics of Virginia. Low twenties coming.

Supposed to get down to 22 tonight so packed my heating beast full cruising away at 750 with the blower on low and 87 in the living room. Problem is the wind picked up and warmed up slightly outside
Hopefully wind will stop and temps will drop. All this talk of artic air on TV is funny. They talk like its never been cold before. I guess I'm the only one who like the cold(outside)

Happens to me a couple of times a season. Supposed to be nasty cold and at 10 pm I load the stove to the gills and get it burning. And come back and the wind has shifted out of the South and warm air is rolling in. Forecast jumps 20 degrees. Gets real hot in the joint on those nights. When you look back at the stove and say "Could we start over?".

Well it's 22 here now, the stove is cooking away in the basement, mid 70's down there, 66 upstairs. Going down in a few to load it up for the overnight burn.

It's a tad chilly, but we keep the house cold at night, I sleep with my window open and a fan on. I like to have the upatairs about 70 during the day, which makes the basement high 70's or maybe 80's. We have the gas furnace set to kick on at 60, and it hasn't come on since we started burning, usually about 64-65 in the morning.

I use 100% cotton sheets, a down-filled comforter and a fiberfill comforter. If it gets really cold I throw on a heavy blanket.
So until this year, I was working with the very tiny Tribute, and was thrilled if I could keep the LR somewhere in the high 60s. I upgraded to the mid-sized Heritage this fall, and in just a few weeks I've become totally, utterly spoiled. It's just over 80 in the LR as I type (17 degrees outside), and a little earlier tonight I was feeling quite chilly in my office off the far end of the very long stove room/LR, and noticed the thermometer in there was reading 70. I'm loving the heat, but I'm not sure this is a Good Thing in the long run being so acclimated to this much warmth, being as how I live in VT all winter and all.If it was 66 in here I would be setting fire to the kitchen table.
The funny part is it's too warm for one of my cats, who's taken to abandoning the chair by the stove for the cooler end of the room. I had to move her chair a couple of feet back from the stove to get her to come back.
But ah, bliss!

Its 20 outside right now, clear skies, frigid. Stove is in the basement heating just over 2000sq ft. Basement is ~82, upstairs is about 74, fringe rooms are at 70.
When I wake up in the morning its still 75 or so in the basement and between 67-70 upstairs.
Power bill: 90$ a month.
Power bill 2 years ago when we first moved in with electric heat? 400$ a month to keep it about 63 degrees inside....
So happy. The pugs don't even need their sweaters indoors anymore and the cats couldn't be more happy.

this morning! House is at 70 degrees before putting another few logs on the fire. I'm wondering how well I'm going to have to insulate my basement now that we are not using the gas furnace? The furnace would keep it somewhat warmer in the basement so I would not have to be concerned about the water lines freezing.

Yep its cooooold. Last night I did the first full load overnight burn on the encore since my rebuild. I was very happy to get a much easier cat light off and had much better control, could leave it unattended at above fully closed without fear of a runaway 
Mosquitoes are dead outside; it's warm inside. This is a good time of year.

Yep, first fire of the season will start this afternoon, hopefully everything will work since she was completely overhauled last year, ha ha.

20F ain't frigid by a long shot. But for Long Island, the middle of November ... see my above comment to Jags .

Feeling the Heat
Bottomed out with a season low of +5f here a little over a week ago. And I consider the weather here to be extremely mild compared to most of the intermountain west. Winter in my location, however, runs from around Halloween through early May. It isn't so much the cold that will make you run out of wood, it's the roughly 7 month burning season. But man is it nice to sit in front of the stove in shorts while it's 12 degrees and snowing out.
