Oak score.

Dropped off by a local tree company Friday morning. Wasn't sure at first if it was white or red, no leaves or shoots anywhere. Turns out to be pin oak.

Spent Saturday S&S a pile of red maple rounds that have been setting here for months. Got out this morning with the saw and maul, noodled/busted a few of the oak blocks. It's too hot and muggy to split wood today.

Oak is always a good score. Hey, it's hot and muggy here too but I split some Oak anyway. Granted, it was only about ten 5" rounds.... Got a few 70/50 days coming here, need to get some more work done at my BIL's before it gets too hot for him.

85 and 65 percent humidity today but I had to make little ones out of nine big red oak rounds and get'em on the stacks.

Any oak is a nice score, congrats Fred. But be careful, all that white sapwood could rot on you over time out in the weather. Don't ask me how I know

It keeps coming. The guys dropped a couple loads this morning and another load is on the way.

The pile of splits is mixed, there's some hedge in there. The rounds are maple, they said this is just the top of the tree. The main stem took a 4-foot bar to cut up.

I druther not have to work up firewood this time of year but have little choice now. Will soon have to create another stack area to hold it all.

White oak usually has at least a hint of vanilla smell when splitting it.

Which is why white oak is used to make bourbon and chardonnay barrels.

Like the old saying goes: gotta make hay while the suns shining! The sooner they are s/s the sooner they start drying. Gotta make room for that primo wood they keep dropping!

Lucky man! The tree companies in your area don't sell firewood? I've tried contacting a few here, they've offered to sell me some, but none that I've seen give it away for free.

Most of the local tree companies sell firewood. These guys are dumping blocks and rounds that don't make for "pretty" firewood... knots and crotches in much of it. They charge for it but it's much cheaper than buying wood already split. Essentially It's pay for their time and expense.

Called over 30 local tree services and landscapers in my quest for wood... found a couple that will drop off for free if they have a tree job out this way. The rest either sell it or grind it up for mulch.

It's odd how they found us... had a Wanted ad posted on CL recently. A local guy called with some gum he was trying to sell. I didn't want the gum but he mentioned us to these guys later. Word of mouth can make world of difference sometimes.
