I'm in the process of installing a new woodstove. Just trying to get all the materials together at this point. I picked up about 20 ft. of older Metalbestos chimney pipe off CL for very little. It's in excellent condition. Trouble is that it's just the pipe and I'm not sure I'll be able to find a roof kit that fits. I took a small section to a local fireplace dealer and they're working with Selkirk to see if any of their current line is compatible.

I was just wondering if anyone might have any thoughts or ideas on where else I might locate the appropriate kit. There are no decals or models numbers on the pipe sections I have. The seller said he thought it was metalbestos and I've identified it as such given the section interlock format.

Thanks for any help.

By roof kit do you mean the flashing and storm collar? If yes then go by the OD of the pipe (and pitch of the roof) to find a flashing that will work.

+1
and if the OP means roof support package, yes the new kit will bolt right on the old pipe (take it off the section of new pipe it comes on)

flat ceiling trim kits to go with the roof support kit will also fit, as will ceiling support boxes.

BUT, technically you are never supposed to mix and match chimney components....

Thanks for your replies guys. Just to confirm, I am in need of the ceiling trim kit/roof support kit and ceiling support box. Basically everything except the Class A stainless pipe that will go though the attic and the roof.

So here is where I'm at. The tech at the local dealer confirmed my pipe is older (obsolete) metalbestos. Though he confirmed it is in excellent condition. I got 19 ft. of it (7 sections - 5 x 3ft., 2 x 2 ft.) for $80 off CL, so I kind of had to go for it.

I called Selkirk myself, and the person I spoke with claimed that their "Sure-Temp" line replaces the metalbestos. I was told that ceiling kit # 206620 should work. The folks at the dealer said they aren't able to confirm whether it will work or not and recommend buying a small piece of that line to confirm that it fits.

But it seems like you guys are saying the newer metalbestos (Sure-Temp) line will be compatible with this older version, is that right?

I went to True Value and Ace where this line is sold. Ace said they won't accept a return on a special order and I forgot to ask True Value - but their website claims they accept returns. Any final confirmation would be most helpful - in case anyone recognizes that kit # or has additional info. THanks so very much!

I'm interested in this install. Do you have photos?

Thanks. I'm in a similar position where I have existing pipe, same model as yours. What pipe are you using for the interior?

Is your inside flue going to be single wall? It looks like the kit includes the DSAC stove pipe adapter, but it says it's for single wall. I don't see any adapter for double wall.

I found this older video for Model SS II installation:

Thanks for the video, this will be helpful!

Still waiting for the kit. TV has yet to process/ship my order.

I was planning on using double wall for the stove pipe. Selkirk's DSP pipe is double wall and the DSAC in the ceiling kit can be used with the DSP pipe, or they have a separate DSP ceiling kit for the stove pipe. Scroll down to page 19 of their brochure:
(broken link removed to http://www.selkirkcorp.com/installation-planners/emery_planner/support/Premium-Offset.pdf)

So the kit looks like it may work, but not with DSAC adaptor that comes with it. The male coupler on the DSAC pipe has a diameter that is just narrow enough to make it so that it won't interlock with the old metal best pipe. I wanted double wall stove pipe anyway so I may try with the DSP pipe instead, or the adaptor in their catalog? Everything else is the right diameter.

So I picked up selkirk's "Universal Chimney Adapater" as well as the DSP chimney connector that is supposed to work with the sure-temp/metalbestos lines. My findings are that the diameter of the DSP chimney connector is too small to "lock" into the older version of metalbestos that I have - just like the DSAC connector that came with the ceiling kit. It will sit in the groove at the bottom of the chimney piece and seems to be secure in the ceiling box, especially with the weight of the chimney from above. But I'm wondering if it's safe to use it like this when it doesn't actually lock?

As for the universal adapter, I don't see how this is useful. According to the instructions it is to be used with the DSP chimney adapter anyway. So it seems that my choices are to use these part as is, even though the chimney connector does not lock into the chimney, or to purchase all new chimney and forget about the older stuff even if it's in excellent condition.

Thoughts?

Can we get some photos? I was able to take my chimney adapter and slide it right up into the support box. Then the double wall slipped right over it.

I'll try to get some photos up later today.

So what parts did you end up using?

My dealer didn't sell Selkirk, so we went with a Duravent telescoping double wall and their chimney pipe adapter (model numbers on the invoice at home).

Ok here are some photos of the components I have and how they fit together:

1. Here's the older metalbestos Class A chimney. Seller claimed it was about 10-15 years old. A local installer confirmed it's older metalbestos:

2. Here's the Selkirk "Sure-Temp" chimney adapter. When I spoke to Selkirk, they claimed the Sure-Temp line would be compatible with the older metalbestos pipe. As you see from the photos, it does fit in the recess of the chimney, but the diameter is about 1/16 of an inch too narrow and it won't "lock". I suppose I could get it to lock if I flared out the slots, but not sure I want to go there:

3. This picture shows the gap between the locking tabs. Here, one side is locked, and the other side just doesn't touch:

4. Here are some photos of the inside with the adapter seated:

5. Here you can see that the adapter does fully seat at least a good inch:

7. And then finally, you can see the universal chimney adapter that is used to connect the chimney adapter to the stove pipe (double wall):

And the Duravent adapter worked with the older metalbestos chimney?

Yes. Although I didn't have the additional chimney adapter that you show. The ceiling support comes down, I installed the DV chimney pipe adapter (with 2 screws to secure it), and the telescoping DV pipe fit right into it.

Below is a photo before we fastened the pipe.

And the DV adapter connects to the chimney pipe inside the ceiling support kit? Does it slide up into it? Thanks very much for your help with this.

Ya, that's exactly right. It just slips in. So I didn't have to lift my chimney and put the adapter in from the top.

Not sure. The adapter looked like this:
