yes we got everything from home depot we knew what we wanted and they just happen to have it, and great price so can't complain about that

got any pics? I'd really like to see it, as I want to do the same thing w/ slate...can't decide between 6 and 12". Lowe's also had some 4" mosaic borders that might look interesting, too.

I'm wondering a couple of things about slate, in general:

Do you cut the tiles the same way as ceramic tiles? (tile cutter...score and snap) Or do you have to use some other method? (wet saw or masonry cut-off wheel?)
I noticed that the surface on many of the tiles isn't perfectly flat...some are quite far from it. Is it going to cause a big problem sliding a big heavy stove into position, or leveling it, on such an uneven surface? Or do you just buy some extra boxes of the tiles (they're pretty cheap!) and pick through to get the flattest, smoothest ones?

Actually we only paid $8.35 a box for the slate, we did pick thru the boxes for the colors we like, the unevenness wasn't a big deal. We did buy extra because we are also going to do our entrance way to match. My husband bought a diamond cutting wheel for his grinder. This was the 1st time he did any kind of tile, so he kind of asked friends that have put tile in and that is what was recommended.

I'm very happy with the way it turned out, now all we have to do is wait for the stove.
