Pellet Grill Questions.

I'm thinking of picking up an Englander pellet grill from Home Depot and have two questions.

1. I do a lot of grilling steaks and chicken.... How long does it take to heat up compared to gas?

2. What is the fuel consumption on these types of units?

The material for the ESW grill says it uses 4 pounds of pellets per hour max and 4 amps of electricity.

actually I will be cooking a couple rib eyes on mine in a few minutes. it comes up quite quickly, how it compares to gas im not certain haven't cooked on a gas grill in years (have a BGE) but its quite fast, way faster then it is with my egg and charcoal.

How hot can this grill be fired? I'm thinking that it might work well for pizza - have you tried this?

Also, what CTC is required? Can it be burned on a deck or do I need to put it on non combustible surface?

700 degrees. Pretty much everything about the ESW grill is in the manual. Including the CTCs.

Well i guess that makes sense then..... maybe you could give me some insight. How long does it take to take the stove from ambient to 450 degree lid thermometer temp. I do alot of grilling and some slow cooking. I'd rather burn wood than propane for economic and ethical reasons..... but we cook on our grill 4 nights a week and often dont have much time for pre heating, 10-15 min tops....

I bought the Englander back in November and I don't regret it one bit. I cooks steaks really well and its just awesome. I've smoked a little bit and it does well. You cant go wrong with the purchase. It's better than a trager or any other pellet grill

ok bob, its 68F ambient outside , I started the grill set immediately to 450F it took 7 and a half minutes by my watch to hit 450 on the dial on the door, it took 45 seconds after that to hit 450 on the thermo coupler mounted on the back wall of the cooking area(inside)

had to turn it back down as it would turn hot dogs into cinders in a second at that temp.

FWIW I usually set for 350F to cook steaks , on the direct side its hotter than that as its directly over the wood fire. if you are into searing but still cooking closer to well done , I sear first then place on the upper deck to cook through for the wife (she aint into pink) searing first seals it up and it still ends up pretty darn moist for a well done cooked through steak

Thanks for that Mike, i like rare so thats why i like a hot grill. Just a bit more than seared on the outside. 3 minutes each side on a 1.5" ribeye. Yummy.

I like mine a bit more done than that but I like somewhat rare as well. i'd suspect though that the grilling surface when it hit 450 on the dial was over 600. the dial is on the right side door over on the indirect side.

Nice. Last question, what are the grates made of? Stainless, porcelain coated steel..... Up until last week I had my heart set on a stainless Weber genesis, mostly because of the longevity and reputation of weber products.

the direct surface is cast iron, the indirect and top grill are nickel plated steel.

Weber makes some great grills, i have a tabletop gas grill (about the size of a big hibachi) ive had for many years, runs off the little screw on propane bottles, its our camping grill as well as one i would occasionally pull out to cook a quick burger or two on before i got my BGE. the full sized gas grill (a brinkmann from lowes is in the garage , im going to rework it replicate the heat diffusers here at work clean it up nice and give it to my sister.

In terms of maintenance, which cannot be discounted on any outdoor grill, I prefer Kamado style ceramic grill / smokers. I have a Big Green Egg but there are other manufacturers. The outlay is high initially but I say again: Very... Low... Maintenance. I do something significant like replace a gasket every 6-8 years. That's it.

true, my BGE requires very little maintainance. the pellet grill doesnt (or hasnt so far ) required any to speak of either, has an ash drawer for the pellet ash and a grease trap on th eindirect side leading to a drip bucket that hangs on the outside of the grill. cleaning the burn pot isnt somthing that has to happen each use, ive done mine like 3 times in the almost a year of reasonably heavy use. the pot actualy stays quite clean.

I mention it only because I have more than a decade of hard data on the BGE. I remember maintenance being more an issue on LP grills. Mike, if you have a BGE, why do you need a pellet grill?? Or this more about "want".

actually , somone posted the "pelletheads.com" link above , there is a page devoted to about every kind of pellet smoker out there including ours. a fellow did a review of the 21-pg100 on it and was pretty thorough. here's a lionk to his thread (if the mod's are cool with me posting to another forum of course, if not feel free to pull it back down and the OP can PM me for the link i suppose. the guy that did this by the way is in no way affiliated with ESW.
