Situation:
I have a 2533 square foot home that had a terrible HVAC system layout, propane furnace and was under insulated. Last year I bought a PF-100, threw down R-30 insulation over the existing insulation, and fixed the major hang ups in the HVAC (three inch gaps in pipes, fist sized holes chewed in flex duct, etc).
My propane tank is an underground, 1000 gallon tank. Propane costs $3.44 a gallon as of today, I have 350 gallons left and the only thing running on it now is the water heater, I live with my girlfriend, we both shower once a day for a max of twenty minutes. Oh and a dishwasher run about once a week.
Last year with the house in terrible heating condition (insulation and problems in system) I was burning an entire tank a month. So about $3k in propane. So I burned mostly wood in my insert, but was in a room with 27-30 foot cathedral ceilings. On a good day I got the house up to 62 degrees...hence the pellet furnace.
Today I call the propane company and they are shocked that my last fill up was January 17th last year and I have 350 gallons left. I tell them my living situation, my changes I've made, and my new furnace and that I only run a water heater off it. I then mention I wanted to know my options as far as going to a smaller tank, then removing the tank or me getting a tankless electric water heater (that the tankless electric was not an honest consideration, just to make my point stronger) and I asked what my options were at this juncture for propane and the tank.
She continues with the shocked routine and talks to the manager. Comes back, offers me 200 gallons of propane for $2.99 per gallon today, and no tank rental fees per year, as long as I buy about 200 gallons for water heat. Doing the math, it seems this makes sense (Staying gas) over electric water heat.
It was a good feeling. So much for the $550 a month "budget billing 12 month plan" they wanted last year.
