I cut and split some last year and plan on doing this Sunday or Thanksgiving weekend.

Don't know how old it is but the quality of hard maple will diminish to soft maple standards in a couple of years if left in log form and not cut and split and sheltered. That log may fair better because it is suspended above ground.

+1. I've had decidedly poor results scrounging trees that look like this one. Typically around me I'll get 40% usable rounds, 60% rotten junk filled with ants, mice, etc etc. I've all but given up on trees that are not still standing until I become more desperate for wood....
