as part of our fireplace replacement, we plan to also rip out the carpet in the living room and install red oak flooring (the unfinished kind). i am interested to see if anyone has a wood floor next to their fireplace and how the finished around the hearth. right now, i'm kind of thinking of a picture frame effect (strips of dark wood woven into the lighter red oak), but i'm not sure if that's the best look or if there are other cool ideas out there.

thanks in advance for your pics!

I could post a pic ... but it's nothing fancy . . . just wood flooring running length-wise . . . where it butts up to the hearth I have a painted gray trim board bordering the hearth . . . very simple affair.

This is how we had our oak floors done. The hearth pad was laid on the sub-floor then the oak flooring framed around it - corner install.

If you want to do an early American look - This one is in our den ,original c. 1800.. Ive been in lots of houses that vintage thoroughout New England and this was a very common way to trim the hearth surround in those days.

Click on my avatar picture. That's red oak floor. The limestone border is cut back on the bottom edge so the flooring goes under it.
