Pot belly restoration question

OK guys I recently picked up an old pot belly wood stove, I'm in the midst of restoring it, I have it all tore apart and wire wheeled down as much as I can.

My question is what would be the best chemical to treat/clean the iron prior to painting?
 
I normally use just alcohol.
