The transfer turbine just kicked on and I noticed that my energy monitor said it drew 1600 watts at steady state. Did not notice startup reading, not that it would necessarily have been accurate. Anyway, looks like my 2kw Honda might not start it up.
 
I suppose you could power it with a modest battery and an inverter sized to handle the load. Make it something like a 5kW inverter. Keep the battery full with a trickle charger. Use the Honda to keep the battery charged during boiler ops.

Basically, this is the electrical equivalent of a thermal storage tank between your boiler and the load. I expect that some electrical guru can recommend a more elegant solution, maybe using capacitors or something.
 
I think a battery and inverter might be cheaper...

Not sure if the 2000i modulates output on its 12V output. Might need a 120V battery charger that stops charging when the battery fills up. In any event, a deep cycle battery would power the boiler for awhile in case you weren't around to fire up the Honda, or it had a starting glitch (mine has on a couple occasions).
