We just purchased a new home with a wood burning fireplace. I had someone out to sweep it, and he recommended adding a second cap and redoing the tuckpointing. From the photos attached, clearly the work needs to be done. He asked $500 for this work. Does this seem like a fair price, or should I get more quotes?

Thanks for any input!

Seems like a good price. I got quoted almost $1000 for similar work, and all indications are that this is one of the more fairly priced masons in my area.

It seems really low for what needs done there. You need a crown and some bricks replaced and some others relaid as well as some re-pointing. I would probably quote it at 750 to 1000 depending on access and other conditions. So if you trust the guy and he is going to do a good crown replace bad brick and do a stainless cap go for it.

Wow, thanks! Here I thought $500 was kinda high. He seemed like a nice enough guy so maybe I'll give him a try.
Check references. If it is not done right you will have to redo it in a few years and you will have thrown away $500

Oh you know what, I looked at the quote again and it was $150 for the cap and $500 for the crown/tuckpointing. I liked this guy in person, and he has good references on Yelp / Angie's List. I think I'll go with him, especially since the other quote I got was $1500.

No way I could get that kind of work done here for under a grand.... sounds good to me.

I need to do the same sooner or later.

Wow that is a great price! Mine wasnt as bad and I got quoted $1200 (I ended up using hydraulic cement for the cracks and buying a 32"x32" cap to cove the thing from the elements).
