Quadra-Fire Castille -- How to Rplace Gasket Around Glass Door ?

Hi Everyone,

The gasket around my door is becoming frayed and needs to be replaced. I stopped by my local Quadra-Fire service center, and I purchased about 4 feet of the "Tadpole" type gasket from them.

My pellet stove is approximately 6 years old. I removed the glass door, and I am not sure how I am suppose to remove the old gasket. My model does not have a retaining bar holding the gasket in place.

Has anyone replaced this gasket before, and can offer some advice?

BTW - I checked the manual, and I couldn't find any information on how to replace the gasket.

Does it seem like the gasket material is glued or taped onto the glass? You may want to post this on http://forum.iburncorn.com/index.php on the Quadrafire section. I am sure that Kap will be able to help you.

I used a razor to slowly remove the old gasket. Cleaned up the glass before installing the new gasket. My glass did not have a top gasket, make sure you only replace what was originally there. Try to do it in one piece, start from one corner and go around. The sticky part goes on the outside of the glass and the thick part wraps around to the inside.

Dannmarr has it right. I could not remember how I had replaced mine last year. But after reading his post - it came back. Tough getting old

Thanks Farmer! The fireplace came with the house but I found that it was not efficient. I was lucky to find this insert on Craigslist, it matches perfectly. I'm happy with it so far, it supplements my expensive propane furnace. I'm also glad I found this forum with knowledgeable members!

The retaining bars on the current units do not hold the gasket, they hold the glass in. So... have you removed thew glass from the door frame yet?

Alright guys, I'm sorry that I didn't get around to responding to this post earlier. Between working and Christmas, it just seems there is never enough time. I know people take their time and try to help others out, and I think its rude when people can't even respond or take the time to say thanks.

Anyway, I took the door off the stove and worked a 2" putty knife carefully around the perimeter of the glass, and I was able to get the gasket off relatively easy.

I then used a small scraper and worked off all the old adhesive that I could.

Next, I sprayed a small amount of adhesive remover around the perimeter of the glass to remove the remaining residue. Finally, I took some alcohol, and wiped the edges of the glass, and let that dry, before applying the tadpole gasket with self sticking adhesive tape.


********* PROBLEM: Now I have noticed that I am getting a chemical smell once the pellet stove gets hot. I am hoping this smell will eventually go away. Any ideas on what could be causing a chemical smell? Could it have been the adhesive remover that possibly soaked into the glass? Or is it the adhesive from the tape on the gasket? Anybody had any smells after putting on a new gasket?

The adhesive on the new gasket will make a smell. Just do a few good hot burns on hi and it will go away.
