Quadrafire Castile..What did I do Right??

So I went to start the critter up this year and the fan didn't start and the auger wouldn't budge. I took the side plate off, took out the auger assembly, and the control unit (3 speed dated 1/9/ 2008). I turned the auger by hand and made sure that the gears weren't seized. I made sure there wasn't anything in the auger tube.

So when I put it all back together, still nada. I spun the fan by hand and it did start. The control did blink a blue light 4 times twice and then stopped.I smelled the igniter get hot so I dumped a hand full of pellets in the burnpot and got a fire. A coupe more handfuls of pellets and the auger started!

So back to my question. What did I do that made the stove start up?
 
The auger didn't feed because the fan wasn't running (no vacuum).

Motors can be a bit reluctant after sitting for the summer. Spinning the fan by hand solved your issue. Keep an eye on the fan for the next few startups just to be sure that's all it was.

By spinning the fan, did it then jump right up to full speed? The igniter should not have gotten hot unless the exhaust blower was on. Now perhaps it was stuck or has a bad winding? [Hearth.com] Quadrafire Castile..What did I do Right??
 
Hey, this IS important that the OP realize that his Castile CANNOT be put in a bedroom!!!!!

The exhaust fans can get stuck by sitting out of season sometimes. I had the same thing happen to a customer once. As suggested, keep an eye on the fan for a while. Might be going the way of the buffalo.

Hey welcome kappel. With corn about $108 a ton now its going to be hard to beat this season. Trying to get the folks a stove to shove into the fireplace as the wood supply is way off from what they need to get through the year.

Hi to you too Bioburner. Thanks for the welcome. Ya, I had to dig my Kanburn cleaner/mover out of mothballs as I am back to burning corn this year too. It's a no brainer with pellet prices not coming down. Menards didn't even have a sale this summer like they usually do.

I really should look into the prices around here in Georgia, but there isn't a whole lot available. I wonder if Quads burn cotton.... :)
There is some corn but I honestly don't know what they do with it. Feed for all the chickens that are raised here?
 
Ground corn is a major feed stock for beef,pigs and chickens.

Is there something in the Fire Code about this? My Castile manual only prohibits installation in sleeping room of mobile/manufactured homes. I checked some more recent Quad/Harman/ESW/Napolean manuals and all have similar wording. Enviro has a blanket prohibition.

We don't have any of the stupid laws that you are talking about, here in this part of Maine. We had our dealer install the stove and just so long as the installation instructions were followed, we can put it ay where we want.

But back to the problem, the igniter was getting hot (not hot enough to get a flame)before I spun the fan. Yes, the fan went up to full speed when I spun it. I was just checking to see if it was frozen, so I didn't use a lot of force. The stove didn't start right up after the fan started. I took out the auger and moved it by hand until I was satisfied that it was moving freely. It did move pretty hard at first. After seeing the trouble shooting diagram, I have to think that the auger motor was stuck.After I put it back in, the stove started after I got a flame.

In my part of Maine, there is no fire code to cover this installation.

What about the blue flashing light? I have to think this is an error code of some kind.

The blue light tells you what setting the control box is on. The stove might have started slow the first time if there was no fuel in the pot to begin with. Sorry for highjacking your post. kap
