This may be a dumb question but here goes when i cleaned out my stove [once a year for the last three years] I always wondered what that blanket did for the stove . there's a guy in town said he took out the blanket and fiber plate an put in a chunk of steel an said that it worked good [ i don't think he knows how it should work in the first place] I know i should keep it in there i was just wondering if anybody could tell me why thay put it in there thanks

It redirects the exhaust (smoke) across the manifold tubes. The tubes inject super heated air into the smoke and ignite the gasses which is what we call secondary burn. This gives you higher efficiency and lower emissions.

Now.. why they use this ceramic board and insulation instead of steel, not sure. Some of the old designs did use steel, and 1" of insulation. Its possible with the ceramic board, since it helps insulate, they only need 1/2" of insulation which is what most Quad stoves currently use.

I am sure its to insulate as much heat as possible in the firebox. With a steel plate there it would keep a certain amount of convection heat in the fire box, but the radiant heat would would go right through it as wasted heat. I would also think that the wasted heat would hinder the secondary burn. It would work with just a plate of steel, but not as well. and if you took the top baffle out you would have a fancy looking Non EPA stove with no seconardy burn.
