Depends, Do you have an old stove or a newer epa one? What does the manual say? Mine says no grate.

dont have a manual for it. its a earth stove 1100ht and only thing i could find was on a newer model that says burn on the brick. i think its on the brick but wanted to be sure.
 
What stove? What fuel? Wood, generally no. Coal invariably yes. We crave more info. Rick
 
With the Earth Stove you burn on the brick.
 
And do keep 1-2" of ashes on the brick whenever you take out the ashes.
